Lions And Bulls Dealt Telling Blow
Taroona Blues had a solid win in Devonport and sent an ominous warning to the competition leaders. The penguins controlled the first half with both structured play and big hits from the forwards; creating space for the try scoring backs Charlie Holmes, Rob Homes and Alistair Burke.
Devonport were well served by the halftime talk and came out strong in the second stanza playing their own ball game in an attempt to stage a much needed comeback. Taroona’s defensive line remained strong in the crucial moments aided by best on field Villi Vea and Nathan De Hoog. Taroona also won bragging rights over their southern counterparts; being the only team travelling north this season to notch up a win.
Front-runners Launceston have retained top position on the competition ladder, although the visitors coaching staff and spectators were kept on the edge of their seat for the entire 80 minutes. Whilst Launceston hit the lead in the first half, Hobart managed to stay in contention with large periods of possession and telling runs led by veteran fullback Kyle Holland.
Launceston was best served by flanker come fly-half Angus Cosgrove and was ably assisted by Rob Lyons and Tua Agaiava. Hobart’s best were Wilhem Koch, Derrick Clack and flanker Adam Scotch Johnstone.
The Lions and Bulls were dealt a second blow, with Harlequins unable to repeat their first round upset against a rampaging Glenorchy Stags outfit, who have cemented themselves into forth position on the competition table.
Quins Coach Colin Fiela attributed the Quins inability to train during the week and an inconsistent performance to the loss. Stags Coach Shannon Banks was impressed with his sides’ ability to get the job done in the crucial moments of the game and applauded Aaron Wale and Zac Gregson for exceptional performances.
University Red Men, whilst out of contention for the finals, left nothing on the field against the Burnie Emus; almost causing the upset of the round.
Uni led 12 -7 going to the break and Uni Coach Trent Henderson was impressed with his sides tenacity. Burnie Coach Dave Webber commented on the impressive uni outfit and further acknowledged that a couple of missed opportunities allowed Burnie back into the game. Best for the Red Men were Nigel Chigweda, Rob D’Arcy and centre Fabien Demay while Brett Bentley and Tom Zaflania were committed for the Emus.
