Launceston Measure Glenorchy's Strength
Peak interest in Tasmanian Rugby this weekend surrounds the northern clash between Launceston and Glenorchy and the local derby at Devonport where a win for Burnie would defend second place from a last round bye.
Launceston showed possibly their best form dishing a 40 point drubbing to Devonport and had similar measure of the Stags in their previous clash. There is a minor risk for Should Glenorchy lose and pursuers Hobart Lions win, fourth place may still be threatened.
Launceston know that a win over Glenorchy will give their finals preparation some polish. The Stags will know that their pack has to combat the relentless forward momentum of the hosts if they allow any latitude at the breakdown. Taking a competitive side north is vital for Glenorchy who have less concern from injury than for most of the season. Colin Montgomery and Nick Sotiriou have been key performers for Launceston whilst Zac Gregson and Tom Dare set the pace up front for the Stags.
At Devonport the Bulls will be keen to preserve a strong season against their neighbours Burnie who have several players returning to bolster the team that performed admirably in discarding Taroona’s challenge last week.
Both teams produce ball from the top of the lineout to midfield runners. Burnie’s leaping capacity has suffered from poor throwing but they are aggressive enough to pressure the opposition’s throw. Devonport’s Marika Meo is perhaps the most potent ball-carrier in the competition. Their skipper Sean Puke is a valuable link in defence and attack particularly contesting ruck possession.
Burnie can score points rapidly, but can take time to settle. Their most consistent contributors are Brett Bentley and Rhys Webber who turn up whenever pressure is applied.
At Rugby Park Taroona may find Hobart Lions a challenge to recovering form and rhythm and shoring up third position. The Blues were effective once they shifted the ball last week but could not secure repeat phase possession and rarely launched attacks in the opposition defensive third. If their best edge runner Pat Schramm returns their inside backs may secure more decision time. Hobart’s Wilhelm Koch and Kyle Holland will punish any lax defence.
Eastern Suburbs encounter Harlequins who were unlucky to be denied at their last outing. Quins’ David Wollemann is likely to control the pace of the match.
